I Have

Well folks I just wanted to let you know what I have.

Perrin Family at Sophie's Birth

Perrin Family at Sophie’s Birth

I have an amazing family

I have friends that just wont stop (even if you want them)

I have people praying for me that I have never met

I have doctors scheduling and waiting for my arrival at M.D. Anderson (sometime in the next few days)

And I have a God who created me and knows the what, where, and how of everything around me.

I also have a tumor in my right hip/pelvis area that showed up on my MRI last week.  So if I have ever been a pain in your ass the favor has been returned and I now have a pain in my ass.  On great days I walk with a limp.  The MRI/CT Scan report came back saying,

“Given the patient’s age and appearance, differential considerations would be led with multiple myeloma/plasmacytoma, lymphoma or sarcoma.”

So yea if none of those sound fun it is because they are not. After speaking with Gloria Ragan she said the blood work is steering away from sarcoma. She lost her son to Osteosarcoma this past year and has been an amazing resource. Her son James was simply amazing and although I only knew him for 2 years and being 16 year younger he had an amazing perspective on life and is a role model on how to treat others. Jams, thank your for sharing a part of your live with me.

Today if you ask me how I’m doing you can expect me to start crying. I don’t think its because I’m stopping to think about what we are facing, but the fact everyone is showing me so much love and compassion. I would have never expected it in a million years.

Giant Letters spelling LOVE

I feel like I don’t deserve it, but I thank you so much for all the love in support. As I’m writing this now I have to stop, wipe tears, and blow the nose.

I’m ready to start this fight and I know I have one hell of a team around me. I will try to keep you posted with the progress and how things are going.

Thanks for the prayers

-Derrick

Derrick, I left you a FB post yesterday, but then I removed it because I was afraid I had possibly posted something that gave more info than you wanted out there yet. So…I will repeat what I said as best I can. I’ve not slept…can’t get you and your wonderful family out of my mind. You have been in my heart for about 30 years now, although I have been lousy about staying in touch. I’ve prayed for you many times, but never as much as I have since I found out yesterday. I know God will allow you to win this battle. Like you said…you have a tremendous amount of people praying for you. You’re a good man, a good friend, and an amazing daddy. Our phone number is the same as it was when you became our “adopted son”. Please call if there is ANY thing at all that we can do. Meanwhile…you’re in my prayers and forever in my heart. Love you!

Much love, respect, and prayers. Feel it or not you do deserve it. If there is anything we can do just let me know. I realize we don’t live close but sometimes just having someone to talk to helps. And regardless of what it is you’ve always been a fighter and will beat it.

As someone who also has faced medical challenges, I can say with personal experience you are in the best place in the entire world for treatment. I’ll be praying your tumor is NOT malignant. But if you do need treatment, you are in the best care available. Find comfort in the fact you have so many, many prayer warriors at your side. I am also here if you need any guidance/assistance in navigating your health obstacles. God bless you and your beautiful family. ;)Rebecca

    Derrick,
I am Kateri’s aunt. I saw the story she shared on FB. I know that you must feel like you are looking down the mouth of a lion who is standing over you. The people who I have seen do the best with a major health challenge, one that threatens their life, are those who are strong in faith, maintain a positive attitude, and go after the bad stuff with ultimate nutrition. I will be praying for you and your journey, daily. Give your burdens to God and let him carry them.

Thank you for your words Cindy. I really appreciate it. We just pray to the lord and let him take care of it. We are trying our best to keep nutrition a major priority.

Hello Derrick, I know it’s been years since I’ve seen you guys and I don’t know if you remember, but I’m a 10 year Survivor- Stage 3b- 10cm tumor wrapped around the iliac artery stem in my right hip. It was a tough year, with surgeries, chemo and radiation, but with Faith, Family and Friends I made it! I know you will have rough days and sleepless nights, but your amazing attitude will help carry you through- I know this is hard to believe now Derrick, but cancer was a blessing in our lives- we were forced to walk by Faith, not by sight, to Be Still and let God…and He did, He took care of us and I know he will take care of you and your beautiful family

Derrick I have only met you twice before, but I know James and Robin well. I am so sorry to hear of your health issues. I will pray for you and your Family expecting God to Bless You with favor and healing. God says to pray expecting his Miracles. I assure you we will be doing just that. I also know that there is power in numbers and will call upon my pray warriors to lift you and give you peace and comfort for you and your family. God Bless and Comfort you all.

Thanks for the prayers Robert and Lanphier. We are defiantly looking at all options. It seems that my cancer reacts good to chemotherapy so that is looking like the first plan of attack. The concept of putting a toxin in my body to flush out other toxins really doesn’t add up, but I’m optimistic the reports are accurate. We will be praying for guidance in this sea of cancer.

    Derrick, you have:
    – The love of your beautiful family and friends
    – A great, positive outlook – which, from someone who’s faced health issues can tell you that’s very important
    – Your best years ahead of you – and we look forward to hearing and reading all about them.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Derrick~ Please know throughout this horrific battle you may have some rough rounds, but you will not be alone. Without a doubt, you will have many prayer warriors standing in your corner. A dear friend recently sent me a few quotes to motivate my spirit, if you will. This particular quote was quite helpful, so I’ll pass it along to you….an old Japanese Proverb, “Fall down seven times, get up eight!”

As a psychotherapist, I always liked to use a technique known as “Guided Imagery” with my patients. I still use this tool when a family member, friend, or even myself is faced with a “scary” situation (i.e. dental work to death). It seems so simplistic, however it is quite effective. You cannot think of two things at one time! It is utterly, impossible. So it’s either hospitals/doctors and cancer or a fun day with your family….perhaps, at the beach. An example of this technique would be….

    Your special place
Pick a favorite place. It could be a garden, a waterfall, a room, or anything else. A place where you feel good and safe. Now, close your eyes and go to that favorite place. Walk around slowly and notice the colors and textures around you. What do you see? … What do you feel? … What do you hear? … What do you smell? Take your time while you walk around. Spend some time exploring each of your senses. And notice how good and relaxed you feel.

Remember these sensations, they are the sensations of your very special place. A place where you can relax. Say to yourself: “I am relaxed, my body feels warm and heavy, I am safe here”. Enjoy the feeling of deep relaxation.

When you are ready, gently open your eyes and come back to the present moment. I noticed the cute photo of you on your FB profile page with your head buried in the sand (or at least, I’m assuming that is you as I could not see your face), so a special place for you just may be the beach! I use the beach scenario a lot….probably because we can relate so well being from CC and all. Jump in a hammock, slowly swing back and forth, feel in the sun, joy, and a strong healthy body, smell the salt water, listen to the waves crash upon the shore and the seagulls overhead. Well, I think you get it. You can even leave the kids at home… 😉

I have had two daughters on the brink of death; one who had HELP Syndrome (pregnancy related) who had to have an emergency blood transfusion prior to an emergency cesarean delivery and the other who had complications related to an Ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy related again) who had to have emergency surgery just hours after her father passed away. And I might add, both of which were life threatening. So, I understand. You’ve got to fight the fear along with fighting the disease.

Most of all keep the faith~ He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. ” (Matthew 17:20 NIV)

Lastly, remember….I’m in your corner along with many others….and there are 12 rounds in a boxing match! Thank God daily for your healing. Proclaim it in advance, proclaim it now! Stay + and keep your precious 🙂 …..
    Love to you Derrick…..

I have known your family a long time, back when your mom had Becky’s Better Bodies and your grandmother Pat was a church with my grandmother. Watching you and James grow into the fine young men that you are. I know your parents are very proud and they should be. We are told that god will not give us more than we can handle, sometimes I would wonder if I could get through some of my trials. I always came through, just like I know you will. You and your wonderful family are in my thoughts and prayers. God be with you.
